Getting your staff to take responsibility for there own wellbeing
Posted on Thursday 18th May 2017 at 11:38 am by Jon Kestell
Many employers provide support and training for staff on the subject of Staff wellbeing so why do they not see improvements in absenteeism?
I have been training in the field of staff wellbeing for the past 7 years and whilst it is fantastic to see so many organisations taking on their responsibility to staff in regards to their wellbeing It is also frustrating to see so many man hours and finance dedicated to this subject without any real improvement or change in culture.
This mainly comes from the subject of staff wellbeing being a one way focus usually from Management & Team leaders who with the best intentions role out fantastic wellbeing programmes which staff don't engage with. This observation led to me drastically changing the way I approached staff wellbeing training and how I advise / coach clients to ensure that they get the outcomes from their wellbeing programme that they desire. The one single most important change that I made was to ensure that wellbeing was not just a one way directive it has to be two ways with employers providing support & strategies and employee's engaging and utilising the initiatives that have been made available to them. You would not believe how many wellbeing surveys I conducted in my early training days that had statements from staff such as "yes my employer does take wellbeing seriously however I feel that this is just a tick box exercise so as they can say that they have fulfilled their duty of care". I specifically work on breaking down this perception and taking time to actually give staff and Management the level of information required to understand why staff wellbeing is so important and that it is quite a straight forward process to implement a successful strategy that gets staff to buy into the strategies and support that has been developed and part of the organisations wellbeing policy. If you feel that this is where your organisation is currently give me a call to discuss how I can help you change the outcomes that you get from your wellbeing strategy and gradually change the culture of the organisation. |
